Intermediate Practice in Motivational Interviewing

Welcome to the online module Intermediate Practice in Motivational Interviewing. This module will provide intermediate-level practice for health professionals looking to refresh and/or enhance their MI skills through interactive activities.

The purpose of this module is to enhance clinical skills and practice in Motivational Interviewing (MI) for health professionals working in respiratory healthcare who have:

  1. An understanding of MI theory from previous workshops/trainings.
  2. Explored MI skills through demonstration and practice within previous workshops/trainings and clinical practice.

At the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the fundamental MI skills.
  2. Apply the OARS strategies (four key components of MI) with clients
    1. OPEN questions
    2. AFFIRM the client appropriately
    3. REFLECT (try for complex reflections
    4. SUMMARIZE ambivalence, offer double-sided reflection
  3. Identify change talk and sustain talk in client interactions.
