First Appointment (Question 11)

You respond with: “Alright, l can certainly talk about stress management today and share a few of my favourite relaxation techniques. Though, I’m also curious to know more about this choice. Can you say more about how you decided to pick this topic?”

Analise responds:

"I picked this topic because lately I feel really stressed and overwhelmed and it’s affecting everything I do. When you asked me what stood out for me on that list, at first it was family but then when I start to consider everything else, what stands out is feeling overwhelmed. That’s why I picked stress management, because I think that if I can learn healthy ways to manage my stress to help me relax than this will give me more confidence to address the bigger things on my list like quitting smoking and managing my COPD."

You chose stress management as the best place to start because it feels like this issue affects everything you do.

In my professional opinion, what will give you more confidence in quitting smoking is learning about the various treatment options. Knowledge is power. I’m happy to teach you some relaxation strategies too, but first let’s address the elephant in the room. You even said yourself you know smoking is the bigger issue, so please stop proposing baby steps and let’s take a big step forward.

Your decision to start with the topic of stress management was quite strategic; you realize that this topic affects all areas of your life, and in particular you have identified smoking. You are well aware that stress fuels your smoking and prevents you from quitting. So given this close relationship between smoking and stress I wonder how you feel about spending the rest of our time today discussing stress management strategies and also the relationship between your stress and your smoking. I think it might be really helpful to tease these two areas apart even further. What do you think about this idea?

You realize that stress is both one of your greatest triggers to smoke and one of your greatest barriers to quitting. These topics are closely linked and you’re hoping that by addressing stress, this will positively impact your smoking.
