Continuing the Converation

You respond with: “Yes, you’re right. You were sent to see me for COPD education. My role is to support people who are living with COPD and so where I’m proposing we start is with what’s happening in your life right now. What else is important to you and what concerns do you have because there is actually a range of options that we could discuss. Does that make sense?”

Analise responds: “Ya that helped. Okay, well I already told you that I’m becoming a first-time grandma any day now, which will keep me very busy. Another thing going on in my family is that my husband was recently laid off. He’s really concerned about not finding another job before his severance package runs out, so money-wise things are a bit tight.”

You respond with: “This is certainly a time of big life transitions for you and your family, let’s add becoming a grandmother/family and finances to our list. What else?”

Analise responds: “I’d love to lose weight. With all this stress, I’m eating more now than ever.”

You respond with: “Okay, I’ve added weight loss to our list and you also just mentioned that one of the ways you self-soothe when you’re stressed is to eat. I’m wondering what you think about adding stress management to our list too?”

Analise responds: “Yes, let’s add stress management, I could definitely use that!”
